Santiago Galeas
CFEVA Visual Artist Fellow, 2024-26
Santiago Galeas, an artist born in Silver Spring, Maryland, weaves the realms of gender, sexuality, and nature in his paintings. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and holding a Masters in Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Art, Galeas portrays queer Latinx Americans against the simultaneous backdrops of North American landscapes and a vibrant fantasy of Latin America. His work explores themes of gender, ecology, sexuality, immigration, and diaspora, celebrating the power of queer and trans individuals in portraiture.
Honored with a grant from the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation, his work has been featured in three publications in New American Paintings. Galeas has participated in prestigious art fairs such as Untitled Art Fair and Artsy Foundations. He has shared his insights and artistic journey through engaging artist talks, including appearances as a visiting artist at South Dakota University, University of Florida, and the Ox-Bow Artist Residency.
Galeas's impact extends beyond traditional gallery spaces, with artist residencies in Mexico, Ecuador, and Ireland. His work has been exhibited in several museum and gallery exhibitions across the United States, showcasing the depth and resonance of his exploration into the intersectionality of identity and nature. Through his inclusion in diverse art fairs, exhibitions and artist talks, Galeas continues to contribute significantly to the dialogue surrounding queer narratives, migration, and the celebration of marginalized voices within the art community.
