Director, Poetry & Art Mural Project
John Shipman brings over 16 years of arts administration, exhibition development and design experience, and creative community engagement and arts education programming to his role as Director of the Poetry & Art Mural Project. He has organized, curated, and designed hundreds of exhibitions during his tenures at the University of Maryland, the Corcoran College of Art and Design, and The Delaware Contemporary, as well as guest curating at other national institutions. Mr. Shipman has worked on solo exhibitions with emerging artists, such as Kris Chau and Jennifer Schmidt, and artists at the height of their careers, such as Judy Pfaff, Tobi Kahn, and Oliver Herring, while also developing large multi-artist inter-disciplinary exhibitions like Poetic. Aesthetic., Sweet: The Graphic Beauty of the Contemporary Rock Poster, and What It Is, What It Was: Music Video as Art. He has organized a variety of impactful community arts projects, including the acclaimed Poetry and Art in Rural Maryland project with artist Bill Dunlap, and the multi-institutional Carving Out Freedom class and exhibition with students and faculty from the University of Maryland and Corcoran College of Art + Design, and community members from Washington D.C.’s Anacostia neighborhood.
