ArtBox @ Lincoln Square: Kate the Earthling, karesansui
On View August 2024-February 2025
ArtBox @ Lincoln Square, 1000 S Broad St.
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) collaborates with Alterra Property Group and Lincoln Square Apartments to exhibit two Philadelphia-region artists considering site-responsive installation each year. ArtBox is a public exhibition space at Lincoln Square Apartments, 1000 S Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA. All are welcome to view and enjoy the exhibitions!
Kate the Earthling’s installation “karesansui” is a vertical moss garden inspired by the Zen gardens of Japan. Preserved mosses and rocks are arranged to mimic mountainous landscapes amidst flowing seas and rivers of sand. As in Japan, Kate’s garden is intended to spark contemplation about minimalism and the beauty of blank space.
While Broad Street hums with the bustle of Center City, “karesansui” provides a stark contrast, offering passersby a space for contemplation, meditation, and quiet self-reflection.
Kate’s "karesansui" invites Philadelphians to deepen their connection with nature and pause for a moment of stillness in the heart of Philly.
Kate Shooltz is a Philadelphia-based moss artist known as Kate the Earthling. Inspired by the natural world, her creations promote a biophilic lifestyle enriched by nature. By using only preserved mosses and other natural elements her creations require no water or sunlight yet remain green and soft for years to come. Using real, but preserved plants ensures that Kate’s creations are accessible to everyone regardless of their green thumb or environment. Kate takes pride in creating a unique piece for each client and never duplicating a design. Every natural element is arranged solely by Kate in her Philadelphia art studio - each patch of moss and individual fern placed with intention and care.
Since 2018, Kate the Earthling has created one-of-a-kind moss walls for clients and spaces all over the United States. Her work has been featured in the Olympic National Park “Terminus” Glacier Memorial Art Project, on Bravo TV’s Vanderpump Rules and Family Karma, in “National Parks” Magazine and the Italian Magazine “Biophilia Natural Trend” and in various online and TV publications such as PureWow and FOX 29’s show “The 215”.
The happiness and purpose Kate has found in a life filled with nature is truly fulfilling. Through her artwork she hopes to inspire others to live the same.

Michener Art Museum Presents CFEVA at 40: Four Decades of Supporting Contemporary Art
Michener Art Museum Presents
CFEVA at 40: Four Decades of Supporting Contemporary Art
Celebrating the Center for Emerging Visual Artists’ invaluable role in the region’s vibrant cultural identity.
February 17, 2024 – May 26, 2024
The James A. Michener Art Museum is pleased to present CFEVA at 40: Four Decades of Supporting Contemporary Art, on view February 17, 2024 – May 26, 2024. The Michener celebrates the Center for Emerging Visual Artists’ milestone year with an exhibition that symbolically includes the work of 40 contemporary artists affiliated with the center who represent the region’s artistic excellence.
CFEVA felt that a partnership with the James A. Michener Art Museum was particularly significant as the goal of celebrating regional artists remains at the heart of both organizations’ missions. CFEVA board chair and co-curator Maida R. Milone noted, “The Center for Emerging Visual Artists 40th anniversary is a significant milestone for our organization. It’s no mean feat to sustain a regional arts organization dedicated to supporting the careers of visual artists, especially those in the early stages of those careers. When we took stock of the artists who have been affiliated with CFEVA over these four decades, we were so heartened to see that many of them are now in the collection of this important arts institution.”
Ranging from established members of the avant-garde to rising stars, this exhibition features over 70 works that will be new to regular Michener Museum visitors. Gerry and Maguerite Lenfest Chief Curator, Dr. Laura Turner Igoe shared, “I think what is most exciting about the CFEVA at 40 exhibition is that several of these important contemporary artists have never shown their work at the Museum before.” Those selected to represent the over 300 fellows whom CFEVA has mentored over four decades include Vincent Desiderio, Katie Baldwin, Rita Bernstein, Ziui Chen, Ada Trillo, and Tim Portlock. Also represented are established artists who have given their time and talent as advisors, including the late Ray K. Metzker, Will Barnet, Sidney Goodman, and current advisor Donald Camp.
CFEVA was founded in 1983 as a support system for the visual artists of the greater Philadelphia region. Since its inception, the organization has dedicated itself to making art careers viable for those who choose them. To this end, CFEVA strives to help visual artists reach their audiences and grow the interest and understanding of visual art among community members. 2023 marked CFEVA’s 40th year of serving artists through its prestigious fellowship program. The artist fellows, chosen by CFEVA’s artistic advisors, go on to shape the region’s cultural community as leaders in the arts. The center’s mission remains important to maintaining and expanding the creative environment and economy of the Philadelphia region. Though CFEVA artists come from a wide range of backgrounds and work across all mediums, they share one common trait: artistic excellence.
The exhibition is curated by Maida R. Milone and Genevieve Coutroubis.

ArtBox @ Lincoln Square: Andrew Chalfen, Effervescent
On View February 13, 2024 - August 2024
ArtBox @ Lincoln Square, 1000 S Broad St.
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) collaborates with Alterra Property Group and Lincoln Square Apartments to exhibit two Philadelphia-region artists considering site-responsive installation each year. ArtBox is a public exhibition space at Lincoln Square Apartments, 1000 S Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA. All are welcome to view and enjoy the exhibitions!
About the Artist:
Andrew Chalfen is a visual artist and musician living and working in Philadelphia. He has been featured at two solo shows in 2023 thus far. His work has appeared at many exhibits nationally and in and around Philadelphia, PA, such as at the Abington Art Center, The Hoyt Center, the Delaware Contemporary, Viridium Gallery, and many Philadelphia locations via his art collective Inliquid. His work has appeared on book jackets and rock album covers. He is the recipient of several awards and is the winner of the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series Mid-Atlantic Regional for 2018 and his piece "Vibration Lands" was displayed at SCOPE Miami during the Art Basel/Art Miami fair.
Statement:
Artist and musician Andrew Chalfen is fascinated by patterns, how they ripple, radiate, refract, bloom, interact, cluster, construct, and deconstruct. His works allude to aerial views, cartography, architectural renderings, musical notation, urban densities, and other natural and man-made patterns, while not literally being any of those things. Rather, his pieces reflect his psychological states during their creation, a kind of topography of thought and mood as he works through various aesthetic themes that have long held his attention. Shapes often spill out over edges, suggesting unseen continuations beyond, while others seek containment. His recent mixed media work with painted dowels focuses on connections, intersections, and layers, a non-representational way of depicting how we relate to the world and to one another.
Chalfen’s process mirrors that of his songwriting and music arranging. He utilizes the repetition of a small selection of formal elements, subtle variation, the timbre of color palate, rhythm, and a combination of randomization strategies and intentionality. Every work is a process journey, in which he refines elements that grab him from previous pieces, and then pushes into unknown territory with experimentation and risk, always iterating. He follows his instincts, deviates from them when necessary, and trusts the process to guide the work to a successful outcome and maybe even a breakthrough or two.
Viewers may not know what to focus on first, becoming overwhelmed and subsequently absorbed in the details. The experience is reminiscent of mediation. Certainly working on these pieces in the studio is a meditative, flow state way of being, where Chalfen can take his time to think about and explore through art-making themes of nostalgia, anxiety, play, musicality, fragility, impenetrable data, accelerating planetary chaos, and physical and psychic fragmentation.

By making paintings of places on the verge of becoming unrecognizable, I am able to spend time with and mourn the neighborhood as I once knew it, while anticipating what is to come. Each painting is made in the exact time and place in which the place depicted was existing, with me in it, and it is sort of an artifact of that moment as experienced by me. Painting the image by hand with only my natural vision to guide me, allows me to decide exactly what information before my eyes needs to be included in the image, and allows the particularities of my senses and movements to determine formal characteristics. I’ve been painting cityscape paintings in this manner for over fifteen years, ever since I learned to paint while experiencing similar feelings of alienation from my surroundings, growing up in Lower Manhattan at the turn of the Millennium.
Sophie C. White will host gallery hours on December 15th, 2pm – 6pm. At 3pm she will speak about painting, perception and how she creates a 2-D image. At 5pm Sophie will be speaking with local community organizers whose work has been an inspiration to her. Together, they will discuss, "some practical efforts being made to push back on the wave of displacement that has been crashing through Philadelphia and cities everywhere in the wake of the 21st century F.I.R.E. economy." The discussion will focus on the activism that's taking place around specific sites depicted in Sophie's work.
About the Artist:
Born in 1984 in New York, NY, Sophie White has lived and worked in Philadelphia, PA since 2009. She earned her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2017 and her BFA from the Cooper Union School of Art in 2006. She is a 2020 and 2021 Fellow with the Center for Emerging Visual Artists. Working primarily as a painter, Sophie makes sculptures and plays drums as well. She has exhibited and performed at numerous arts spaces in Philadelphia, New York City and around the world.
Location: Paintings by Sophie C White is the culmination of Sophie's Visual Artist Fellowship.
The Visual Artist Fellowship underscores CFEVA's commitment to fostering artistic excellence and furthers its mission to help visual artists build sustainable careers. In providing funding and mentorship during this critical incubation period, CFEVA helps artists explore new ideas and pathways to influence their work, and to develop the skills and techniques that can move them forward. CFEVA is proud to create more exposure for the artists we serve. Sophie White will exhibit in CFEVA’s Felicity R. “Bebe” Benoliel Gallery in November 2022.
