Cavin Jones, Down the Rabit Hole

For the last six years I’ve been using the technique of cross hatching in pen and ink to create a series of drawings based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice books, of which there are two. While working on this personal project, I was commissioned by the Philadelphia Jazz Project to create a piece of art to honor Philadelphia based Jazz musician, Byard Lancaster. I naturally chose to use the cross hatch technique to render his portrait metaphysically on paper. In order to depict the various phases of his life and occurrences during his life I collaged imagery that reflected his cultural, political and philosophical interests during his life as musician living in Philadelphia. I finished illustrating the first Alice book “Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland”, which consists of 29 drawings. And I’m in the process of illustrating the second book “Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There”.

I'm a fine artist with a Masters degree in Painting. Over the last 30 years in order to do my personal Artwork, I've worked as a muralist and teacher of arts. I've taught all skill levels from community and kids through Fine Arts students at the University level. I've only briefly had associations with two Art Galleries, Sande Webster Gallery in the 1990's and Seraphin Gallery in the early 2000's. The lack of a gallery, consequently left me to my many personal interests and desires to do particular works in my studio. I've done a wide range of artwork in a number of different styles and techniques. I have four major ongoing series of works.

I won top prize in the Woodmere Museum's 81st Annual Show in Summer 2023. I will be having an exhibition in 2025 at the James Oliver Gallery in downtown Philadelphia.
