Poetics of Place - A Solo Exhibition of Paintings and Prints by Lenore Thomas
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 237 S 18th Street Suite 3A
The exhibition will present a survey of work by Lenore Thomas, whose keen perception and personal observation is the foundation of her abstract paintings and mixed media prints. Thomas presents several bodies of work that reverberate with an ambiguous sense of space, scale, distance and depth. The artist’s use of basic shapes, background pattern, and flat color create unique environments marked by playful tension and pleasantly distorted perspectives. Poetics of Place will trace the artist’s development of process and concept through works from 2008 to present, with an emphasis on the narrative created through her noteworthy titles. The carefully selected titles for each work have become an essential part of Thomas’ artistic process, as the text creates another level of meaning and non-literal reference to the locations which inspired the works in the first place. Viewers will delight in works such as I am an hour ahead of being more awesome than you, Its like a carousel of cupcakes, or By the way this place is a creephole. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 11am-5pm and by appointment.

Berlin: Landscape of Memory - an Exhibition co-produced by PIFA 2013
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 237 South 18th Street, Suite 3A
Artist Talk and Reception: Thursday, April 11th 5-7pm. Created in Berlin in the years just preceding, during and again twenty three years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Abbott’s photographs are an insightful, thoughtful and contemplative portrait of the city during times of momentous change. Fascinated by the character of the neighborhoods the Wall inhabited, these images reflect an intimacy that counters the grand forces we usually associate with a divided Berlin, offering a significant record of nuance in a location that experienced overwhelming historic transformation.

"Out of Bounds" featuring Career Development Program Fellows and Alumni: Susan Benarcik, Ana B. Hernandez, Brooke Hine, Darla Jackson, Mami Kato, Scott Pellnat and Caleb Nussear. Presented by CFEVA and the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education.
The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, 8480 Hagy's Mill Road, Philadelphia, PA 19128
Opening Reception on Saturday, June 23rd (time TBA). The Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education and The Center for Emerging Visual Artists are pleased to present "Out of Bounds," on view from June 23 - September 2, 2012. Participating artists include: Susan Benarcik, Ana B. Hernandez, Brooke Hine, Darla Jackson, Mami Kato, Scott Pellnat and Caleb Nussear. Each artist created works which use nature as a starting place. Exported from a studio, these works begin a new life outside, and against a backdrop of the very thing they were inspired by - the natural world. Familiar forms typically seen outdoors - Susan Benarcik's droplets, Ana Hernandez's fungi, and Scott Pellnat's giant boat are recreated and recontextualized. Other work plays with the natural elements, giving a the viewer a new perspective on the familiar landscape - Mami Kato's work floats on the Fire Pond, and Caleb Nussear utilizes mirrors, layering the visual experience of the woods. As part of this show, installed in the gallery will be Darla Jackson's "Birthday Party," which begins The Schuylkill Center's 25th Anniversary Celebration of our Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic, which treats and rehabilitates thousands of animals each year. The free opening reception for "Out of Bounds" will take place on June 23, 2012. The event will be during a special weekend at The Schuylkill Center, which hosts The Great American Backyard campout each year. Guests for the free opening reception are welcome to stay for a dinner and fun evening activities . Dinner Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 215-482-7300.

Linda Lopez & Joanna Platt: Curated by Jenny Moore
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 237 South 18th, 3A
Opening reception May 31, 2012 5-7pmIt’s always exciting to discover new artists, artists who are working in a new way and thinking of things differently. From the many talented artists whose submissions I reviewed for CFEVA’s Visiting Curator Program, I was drawn to the work of Linda Lopez and Joanna Platt for a variety of reasons. In the work of both artists, objects take on an active role, pulling the viewer into a kind of alternate universe. Lopez’s sculptures appear to have a rich interior life, a fully developed physical and psychological sense of being. They have personality and, in their installation, develop compelling relationships with the space around them. Platt creates drawings and sculptural incursions with electrical devices that seem to have suddenly sprung to life, breaking out of an imposed linearity as if to reveal their personal hopes and dreams through tiny moving pictures. They too interact with their environment, like scandent vines searching for the footings that give them shape.Great art helps me look at things in a way I never have before. The work of Lopez and Platt intrigues me, making me reconsider the world around me with humor and wonderment. Jenny Moore, 2012 Jenny Moore is Associate Curator at the New Museum, where her first exhibition Charles Atlas: Joints Array was presented in 2011. In 2010, she was Assistant Curator for “10,000 Lives,” the 8th Gwangju Biennale with Artistic Director Massimiliano Gioni. Moore was Project Curator for The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, New York from 2005 to 2010 where she directed the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program. The New Museum is the only museum in New York City exclusively devoted to contemporary art. Founded in 1977, the New Museum was conceived as a center for exhibitions, information and documentation about living artists from around the world. From its beginnings as a one-room office on Hudson Street to the inauguration of its first freestanding, dedicated building on the Bowery designed by SANAA in 2007, the New Museum continues to be a place of ongoing experimentation and a hub of new art and new ideas.

Thread of Thought
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 237 S. 18th Street, The Barclay 3rd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103
Artist Talks and Reception: Thursday, March 8th 5:00 - 7:00. A Fiber Philadelphia Exhibition, "Thread of Thought" features books and installation works by Leslie Atik and Tara O’Brien that reveal a romance with language, structure, philosophy, and storytelling. Leslie Atik’s installations are an exploration of the relationships between language and textiles. Drawing inspiration from the fields of linguistics and anthropology, the repetitive and cumulative processes of weaving, netting, and stitching function in Atik’s work much like writing, making thoughts material. Tara O’Brien’s work speaks to the language of structure, fiber, and objects forming a narrative of symbols. Through the medium of books, O’Brien is able to echo the process of living - the first read of a book being similar to life as we never know what will happen at the page turn.

Stigora presents an original installation utilizing 10,000 hand-charred tree limbs, which were gathered from fallen wood from two nature preserves and two private estates and burned over 184 hours. Sprawling across the floor and climbing up two stories, the burnt wood undulates and inspires both physically and metaphorically. Juxtaposed with the turn-of-the century industrial space of the Skybox, Crossing Jordan communicates a powerful story of survival and rebirth.

Binod Shrestha's work narrates personal stories in materials that access nature and where rituals thread the past to the present. "The Imagined" Featuring Career Development Program Fellows Gregory Brellochs, Danielle Bursk and Brooke Hine
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists 1521 Locust Street, Lower Level, Philadelhpia, PA 19102
Artist Talks and Reception: Thursday, December 2nd 5-7pm. Through his large format graphite drawings Gregory Brellochs explores physical, sensual, and visceral worlds of the imagination. Brellochs’ images are intended to act as catalysts for contemplation while evoking a poetic fascination for the inner workings of nature and the mind. Danielle Bursk’s drawings use the action of mark making to create abstract forms that are suggestive of imagined objects and landscapes. Dichotomies of form, line and concept push boundaries in Bursk’s work while remaining self-contained. Resembling many different forms found in nature, Brooke Hine’s installations and sculptures are inspired by found objects in a state of decay. Delving into an imagined history, Hine finds the tactile nature of clay to be ideal for her subject matter and the spontaneous working method, allowing the material to guide the organic nature of each form.

Leslie Atik considers the metaphors common to language and textiles in her installation works. Drawing on a variety of written sources, Atik creates a chalkboard on which the marks of the chalk, tags, threads, and map pins reveal the inherent elegance of the grammatical patterns that are integral to the meaning of the selected texts. Diane Savona embeds domestic objects between layers of cloth to form fossil-like impressions, which can be read as hieroglyphic symbols. Combined with apron images, Savona’s stitched markings suggest cultural maps.

"There's a lot of rhetoric about freedom out there, but ultimately, most people feel more free when there are certain parameters . . .We are always trying to abolish parameters and abolish rules. But actually, rules can be constructive sometimes. They can catalyze creative impulses.” --Andrea Zittel The preceding was artist Andrea Zittel’s response to the economic, spatial and logistical hardships she endured while living in pre-gentrified Williamsburg, Brooklyn during the recession in the 1990’s. Years later, “Limited Engagement” uses Zittel’s insight as a point of departure for an exhibition which showcases the work of five emerging artists who also welcome limitation, rules and structure into their practice. Their work proves that minimal resources or a restrictive premise can yield complex, thought-provoking and innovative results. As artists who continue to innovate in the throes of an even more severe economic meltdown, Laura Cooperman, Jennifer Grimyser, Mayumi Ishino, and Kelly Murphy and Devin Powers demonstrate the liberating effect external or self-imposed limitations have had on their creative process.

"The Landscape Within" Featuring Career Development Program Fellows James B. Abbott, Sean O'Neil and Kara Rennert
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists 1521 Locust Street, Lower Level, Philadelphia, PA 19102
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 29, 5-7pm. The Landscape Within reveals the human psyche by investigating its physicality, powers of recollection, and impression on the environment. In his Cape Cod photographs, James B. Abbott makes two-dimensional interpretations of a highly transitory three-dimensional record of change in the landscape - that which is naturally occurring and that which has been inflicted by human presence. Kara Rennert wants the viewer to be caught in the tension between intimacy and estrangement, both in a psychological connection to her ceramic sculptures and under a physical spell of the sensuous, strange, and beautiful. In his paintings, Sean O’Neil rebuilds fragments of images exploring the disconnect that exists between recollection and reality.

The Felicity R. (Bebe) Benoliel Gallery, The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 237 S. 18th Street, The Barclay, Suite 3A, Philadelphia, PA 19103 Hours: Monday - Friday 10am - 4pm
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 30, 2009 5:30 - 7:30 pm. The Center for Emerging Visual Artists is pleased to present "Fictive Homelands" a Spotlight Exhibition of work by John Karpinski and Serena Perrone. "This time we have to get there," they had decided. Bags surrounded their feet, passports a quick draw from pocket to counter. A proposal to buy a map - the type of map that documents a wasteland between cartoons of historic and favorite sites - killed everything. Because no map existed for their favorite place, at least no map that could be purchased at an airport news stand. They would not dare say it but they had no idea where "there" existed. They just knew that it was the someplace that made them feel complete. Where ever it was.

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 29th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Darla Jackson's sculpture is an exploration of the duality of emotions. Through the use of symbolism and body language, she creates personifications of these emotions that are dark and at the same time humorous. Anne Canfield's imagery is founded out of two worlds - one real and one imagined - meeting somewhere in between. Her current series, Territorial, explores a sense of vulnerability in areas of life otherwise taken for granted as they shift from safe space to uncertain space with the imposing tension of an insecure global world.

Urban Organic
Projects Gallery, 629 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123, (267) 303-9652, www.projectsgallery.com
Opening Reception: Friday, January 9th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Urban Organic presents the work of eight artists who are affiliated with both the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program and the Center for Emerging Visual Artists, two organizations dedicated to providing artists with opportunities to earn a living from their art and the necessary tools to do so. With both organizations celebrating their 25th anniversary during 2008-2009, a joint exhibition was a natural way to highlight the similarities that exist between them and the artists they support. Each organization has grown from a grassroots operation founded by a passionate and resolute individual to become a vital part of the region's thriving visual arts community. The works of art selected for this exhibition reveal a link between the urban and the natural worlds, a contradiction that is integral to life in any city. Artists are particularly aware of this dichotomy as they strive to find inspiration from the environment while being keenly aware of the influence of the metropolitan areas in which many of them live and work. Urban Organic features work by Joseph Brenman, Vincent Desiderio, James Dupree, Jane Golden, Sidney Goodman, Qimin Liu, Pedro Ospina and Josette Urso.

Reception: Thursday, January 8th from 5:30 - 7:30 pm. Intrigued by both the unfamiliar and the ordinary, Julia Blaukopf’s work centers on new ways of depicting foreign places. Blurring the lines between fine art and documentary, she focuses on workers, farmers, families, artisans and other emblems that compose the everyday. Elizabeth Crisman juxtaposes the human skeletal structure in life-size black and white photographs as well as sculptural configurations using transparencies. Influenced by hominid fossils, these images are an examination on the passage of time and the human condition.

Conservation for Artists- September 18th at 5:30
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 237 South 18th Street, 3A
Art is not static. The physical composition of a piece in any medium in conjunction with its age and use will affect its appearance and longevity. All artist materials—a simple piece of paper or the glue used to assemble a complex collage—have unique chemical compositions with inherent rates of deterioration. The integration of multiple materials produces chemical interactions and a spate of preservation challenges. The life of a piece is further affected by housing (framing), transportation, exhibition techniques and duration, and exposure to various environmental conditions. An open discussion with paper conservator and collection manager Susan L. Duhl, paintings conservator Steven Erisoty, and objects conservator Julie Baker will shed light on these issues. Please come with specific questions about your working styles and media. More information about all three speakers can be found at www.ArtConservatorsAlliance.com. Each session begins at 5:30pm and will take place at The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (The Barclay, 237 South 18th Street, Suite 3A, Philadelphia PA). Far Away From The Beginning: A departure from childhood idealism
Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Drexel University, Nesbitt Hall, 33rd and Market Streets, Philadelphia, PA
In cooperation with the Center for Emerging Visual Artists, The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery at Drexel University is proud to present Far Away from the Beginning: A Departure from Childhood Idealism, curated by Tara Caton. Exhibiting Career Development Program Fellows include: Anne Canfield, Darla Jackson, Joelle Jensen, John Karpinski, Jedediah Morfit, Caleb Nussear, Scott Pellnat, Peter Prusinowski, Serena Perrone, Matthew Neff, and Cecelia Rembert. The artwork in this exhibition examines a departure from the idealism of childhood. Once we outgrow the comfort of our youth, we are exposed to the complex reality of adulthood. Life experiences alter our childhood memories creating a complex fantasy world of idealism and darkness. These artists look back on their early years to regain a sense of hope but can’t escape the melancholy of age. Distanced from the toys, adventures, and dreams of our past, we are all far away from the beginning.

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists is pleased to present this Spotlight Exhibition: Jedediah Morfit’s work explores irresistible contemporary sculptural taboos including craft, religion, and narrative. His sculpted plates are as much a celebration of the pleasures of carving and storytelling as they are an examination of the problem of creating meaningful narratives in disjointed times. Joelle Jensen presents quiet, thoughtful and compelling views of lives left behind. The photographs of her parents’ home are beautiful, emotional and often humorous, looking almost scientifically at the spaces and emotional connections made between what was their life and the passage of time.

Through large format black and white prints, Froio highlights what survives of these structures exploring the decay, surfaces and detail of hallowed spaces, creating a life-like presence in buildings at the end of their useful lives. Formally the work is carefully balanced using line and light to bring together architectural space and the chaos that has been introduced as a result of change or demolition.

In Praise of Apathy
The Felicity R. (Bebe) Benoliel Gallery, The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, 237 South 18th Street, The Barclay, Suite 3A, Philadelphia, PA 19103
Hours- Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm (other hours by appointment) This collaboration between artists Matthew Neff and Brian Zegeer is the result of a discussion on the impact of Apathy on our public and private lives. Dense clusters of paintings and printed materials depict a hyper-colored, outsized funeral procession. The black coffin at the installation's center addresses this lull to inaction that locks us individually into habits of over-consumption and the sluggish acceptance of a leadership committed to empire-building. Apathy facilitates the escapist American Entertainment Complex. As such, this installation is an hysteric encounter with film and commercial cataclysm. In Praise of Apathy alternately invokes a resolution of this nightmare scenario and an ecstatic celebration of the Death of Apathy, in which citizens stride potently in a future of glad burdens and new labors.

Emerging to Established: Twenty-five Years of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists- Works on paper by CFEVA Artists and Advisors
The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Director's Gallery, Ground Floor, 26th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA 19130 www.philamuseum.org
Museum Hours- Tuesday through Sunday, 10am - 5pm, Friday evenings, Open until 845 pm. Closed Mondays. CFEVA's annual core activity is selecting its Fellows, a group of ten to thirteen of the region's most promising artists who are chosen by the Board of Artistic Advisors and invited to join the Career Development Program for a two-year period. These artists consistently have gone on to distinguish themselves -- locally, nationally, and internationally -- and many are now leading figures in this city's cultural life. The mission of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists is to coordinate a stronger regional support system for visual artists, to advance the careers of the many deserving artists in the region, to promote relationships between artists and the communities in which they live, and to increase access to visual art for everyone. Adaptation: Celebrating Growth and Change
Felicity R. Bebe Benoliel Gallery, The Center for Emerging Visual Artists
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA) is pleased to announce the Sixth Annual Visiting Curator Exhibition, Adaptation: Celebrating Growth and Change, curated by Brooke Hine. The exhibition will open to the public March 10, 2008 and will continue through April 4, 2008. The opening reception and artist talk will be held March 13, 2008 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, located at 237 South 18th Street, Suite 3A, Philadelphia, PA. The hours of the exhibition are Monday-Friday 10am-4pm. Adaptation: Celebrating Growth and Change explores the processes of growth and change within the contexts of built environments, bodies, structures, organisms, and forgotten places. The exhibition investigates the evolution above and below sea level, in decaying urban neighborhoods, inside our bodies, and within the intricate details that surround our daily lives. Each of the nine participating artists will give us insight into our lives: where and how we fit into the world; and the interplay between past, present, and future. Adaptation: Celebrating Growth and Change is inspired by the theme of "Anniversary" and is being presented in conjunction with The Center for Emerging Visual Artists’ 25th Anniversary year. Founded in Philadelphia in 1983, The Center for Emerging Visual Artists believes that artists deserve the opportunity to build successful careers so that every citizen can have access to quality, original visual art and the artists who create it. Our mission is to advance the careers of visual artists in the region, to promote relationships between artists and the communities in which they live, and to increase access to visual art for everyone.

Felicity R. Bebe Benoliel Gallery, The Center For Emerging Visual Artists
Shea Roggio’s photographs and Lillian Bayley’s oil paintings address, in different ways, political conflict and its consequent effect on humanity. Roggio’s work captures moments in the lives of the Ugandan people, still recovering from internal political conflict and genocide, while Bayley uses the naïve language of toys to examine the relationship that develops between media representation of international conflict and the consumer at home.

Alumni Exhibition: Ava Blitz
Felicity R. Bebe Benoliel Gallery, The Center For Emerging Visual Artists
Ava Blitz’s new work shows a renewed interest in narrative, borrowed from diverse cultural traditions. The work is an exploration of light on stone, concrete, and plaster. It is also an expression of material, tooling, and process, including creative casting. From the artist: This work alludes to the passage of time, petrified in stone or concrete. Lines become blurred and distinctions ambiguous between fossil and artifact, natural history and cultural history, and the present, past, and future.

Alumni Exhibition: Anki King
Felicity R. Bebe Benoliel Gallery, The Center For Emerging Visual Artists
Anki King will display life size drawings done over the last year and a half. The work is based upon imaginary “what-if” scenarios in which the artist envisions herself as she is not; heavyset, black, little, crippled, old, bearded. In many of the works she intertwines black lines of charcoal with wide brushstrokes using gesso, creating a layered depth to her drawings.

Felicity R. Bebe Benoliel Gallery, The Center For Emerging Visual Artists
Culled from the disparate realms of painting and sculpture Mahtab Aslani and Bedel Tiscareno, both New York based artists, present the viewer with an exhibit that is as much about stark contrast as it is about the subtlety of cohesion. Tiscareno's figurative sculpture scrutinizes the political structures that codify issues of morality. Aslani's oil paintings, inspired by the patterns and textures of fabric, blur the line between the representational and abstraction. This unlikely combination creates a dialogue that is open to interpretation.
