Eligibility Requirements
The Center For Emerging Visual Artists selects artists of promise and commitment
who are dedicated to a career as an artist.
- Applicants must have a body of current work of more than 10 pieces, which the artist
is able to show at the time of application. If selected for the Program, artists
must be able to present their work in exposure opportunities offered throughout
the year.
- To ensure maximum participation in CFEVA’s programs and to be eligible for grants
and opportunities of a regional nature, applicants must live in CFEVA’s service
area, which includes:
- Delaware (all counties)
- Northeastern Maryland (counties of Baltimore, Baltimore City, Caroline, Cecil, Harford,
Kent, and Queen Anne’s ONLY)
- New Jersey (all counties)
- New York City (including all boroughs, but no other areas of New York state are
eligible)
- Southeastern Pennsylvania (counties of Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Dauphin, Delaware,
Lancaster, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, Schuylkill,
and York ONLY)
- Applicants must not be enrolled full-time in school at the time of application.
Taking classes part-time is permitted.
- Applicants may not have commercial gallery representation or a contractual relationship
with a commercial gallery.
- Applicants must be dedicated to a life as a professional artist and to the Program.
Career Development Program: Guidelines and Instructions
The Center For Emerging Visual Artists™, formerly Creative Artists Network, was
founded in 1983 to encourage the career development of emerging visual artists.
Since then, the organization has worked to provide essential support to talented
individuals building careers in the visual arts. CFEVA dedicates itself to making
art careers viable for those who choose them, helping emerging artists reach their
audiences, and promoting interest and understanding of emerging visual art in the
community.
Career Development Program Services:
The Center For Emerging Visual Artists offers the following services, free of charge,
to artists who have been accepted in The Career Development Program (CDP).
- Regional and/or national exhibitions.
- Commission-free sale of artwork. The Center For Emerging Visual Artists deducts
no sales commission, but rather requests a voluntary 25% tax-deductible donation from the buyer
at the time of sale.
- Mentorship, community, career counseling, and professional development workshops.
- Volunteer opportunities to give back to the community through CFEVA’s Regional
Community Arts Program.
- Help in finding and writing applications for grants, residencies, etc.
- Continued benefits and programming as alumni of The Program include: Exhibition
opportunities, participation in The Center’s Alumni Networking Group and eligibility
to apply for the Alumni Travel Grant Program and Alumni Solo Exhibitions.
Program Participation Requirements
- Fellows should attend CFEVA events and openings in order to become better connected to the CFEVA community and contacts.
- Fellows in the Career Development Program must participate in the majority of programming offered through the Program.
- Fellows should attend CFEVA events and openings in order to network and become better
connected to the CFEVA community.
- Fellows are expected to be professional in the handling and presentation of their
work. Work to be exhibited must be delivered and picked up on time. It must also
be prepared for installation, including any necessary fixtures for hanging. Work
not meeting this standard may be excluded from the exhibitions. All transportation,
packing and shipping costs are the sole responsibility of the artist.
- Fellows are required to participate in Direct Connections, specialized professional
development opportunities available only to artists in the Program.
- Fellows must complete 40 hours of community work through CFEVA’s Regional Community
Arts Program and 10 hours of volunteer work through the Career Development Program.
- Fellows must donate one piece of exemplary artwork to CFEVA’s collection when they complete the program. Without the donation to the collection, artists will not be eligible for alumni offerings.
Application Process
All applications to the Career Development Program must be submitted online through
CFEVA’s application on Slideroom. All payments must be made through the online application.
No exceptions.
The Center For Emerging Visual Artists’ Board of Artistic Advisors reviews applications.
Advisors will have access to the images and text provided by the artist. Applicants
will be notified of a decision by the end of January.
